If you are looking for a good, feature-filled program to help you create and edit videos more easily on your computer, you may want to consider the Shotcut video editor. To begin with, it is completely free to download and use. Shotcut is an open-source video editing program, meaning you will never have to pay either to download the program to your computer or access the features. While you certainly can't expect it to have some of the advanced features you would get with paid programs, it has all the basics you need to quickly create and edit the videos.
You may not have heard of Shotcut because it hasn't been commercialized, but when compared to some of the other free and open-source video editing tools in the market, Shotcut is actually much easier to use. It also offers a wide range of editing tools that may otherwise be hidden or non-existent in other tools. In this guide, we are going to be looking at how to download Shotcut to PC or Mac as well as answering some of the questions we get about this video editor.
To download the Shotcut video editor for Windows, go to https://shotcut.org/download/ to access the download files. On this page under 'Windows', you should see a number of options to download the executable file for Shotcut as well as a number of sources to get the download file.
The one you choose will depend on whether your PC is a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Keep in mind that Shotcut supports all versions of Windows from Windows 7 and above.
Click on the preferred link, based on your system, and where you would like to download the file from and the executable file will be downloaded to the 'Downloads' file on your computer.
To install the program, simply double-click on this executable file and follow the instructions on the Wizard. Once the program is installed on your PC, you can double-click on the icon in the 'Start Menu' to open the program.
On Linux, I often use the free command to see the current amount of free and used memory in the system. For example: $ free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 729 0 388 -/+ buffers/cache: 4284 Swap: 81264428.
To download Shotcut on to your Mac, go to the same download page at https://shotcut.org/download/ and scroll down to the 'macOS' section of the page. Sometimes you may not see other versions of the program depending on the operating system you are running.
If you don't see all versions, just click on 'All'
Under macOS, you should also see a variety of DMG files from various sources. Simply select one of the DMG files and the Shotcut free download will begin immediately. Keep in mind that Shotcut is compatible with all versions of macOS from 10.10 and higher.
Once you have downloaded the DMG file to your Mac, simply drag Shotcut into the Applications section and you will be ready to begin using the program to create and edit videos.
GNU or Linux users will also go to the https://shotcut.org/download/ page to find the download links. If you don't see the links for Linux, click on 'All'
- Using Parallels 15 for Mac, you can install a copy of Linux on your computer following the directions below. These steps assume Parallels has already been installed on your machine. Click File on the Parallels toolbar. Select New; Highlight Download Ubuntu Linux under Free Systems.
- Download Ubuntu desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu for Raspberry Pi and IoT devices, Ubuntu Core and all the Ubuntu flavours. Ubuntu is an open-source software platform that runs everywhere from the PC to the server and the cloud.
- Linux Mint mac software, free downloads and reviews at WinSite. Free Mac Linux Mint Shareware and Freeware.
- Unlike the above-mentioned macOS lookalike Linux distributions, Gmac is not a full-fledged distribution. It's simply the GNOME desktop with a Mac theme. That means you get Ubuntu Linux with a heavily customized GNOME desktop environment that looks a lot like macOS.
Here, you will also see a number of different locations and links that you can use to download the program to your computer. Before we begin, it is important to note that Shotcut supports 64-bit Mint 19+, Ubuntu 16.04+, Debian 9+, Fedora 24+, Arch/Manjaro 16.10+ operating systems.
Click on a file that corresponds to the system you have from the links on this page and the Applemage download will begin immediately.
Once the download is complete, you will not need to install the program in any way. You will just need to extract the archive file and run it. You can then just drag the Shotcut folder to any desired location on your computer.
You can then begin using the app by double-clicking on the Shotcut app to open it.
Key Features of Shotcut
The following are some of the main features you can expect to get once you have Shotcut on your computer;
- This video editor supports a wide range of video and audio formats thanks to the FFmpeg
- It also supports a wide range of image formats including BMP, JPG, GIF, SVG, TGA, WebP, and TIFF
- It allows for native timeline editing with no import required
- The timeline is also supportive of more than one format at the same time. You can also mix and match frame rates and resolutions in the same project.
- It allows for webcam capture
- You can also use it to record audio
- It supports up to 4K resolutions
- Has a variety of video editing tools and capabilities including rotation, effects, transitions, and filters.
- The editing tools are very easy to use, allowing you to easily cut, copy and paste aspects of the project and easily drag and drop elements into the project page
- Cross-platform editing is also possible; you can begin a project in macOS and finish it in PC or Linux.
The following are some of the most common questions we get about this video editor;
- Is Shotcut safe to Download?
This is actually one of the most common questions about this program and we can understand why some of you may be nervous about downloading the program. After all, there isn't any actual download button on the program's main page and instead, you have to download the program from a number of third-party sites.
But there is a disclaimer on the main download page that you can choose to believe or not. The disclaimer says that all downloads on the page are free of malware, adware, and spyware. Shotcut also says that they do not bundle the program with any other third-party software or tools such as browser toolbars. But this guarantee is only applicable if you download the program from https://shotcut.org/download/ and the links on it.
If you are still nervous about downloading Shotcut, we would recommend investing in a good Anti-virus program. If there is a problem with the download your anti-virus program should be able to point that out.
- Does Shotcut have a Watermark?
This is another question that we get a lot. Most people expect that free tools will allow you to create and edit the video for free, but at the end of the process, the program adds a watermark to the video that can only be removed if you pay a certain fee. It is important to note however that this mostly happens with online tools that need to pay for maintaining the tool in some way. Even though the amount you have to pay is often not too steep, it is still inconvenient to think that a tool is free only to find out you have to pay for it once you've gone through the often-lengthy process of creating the video.
The good news is this isn't a problem that you have to deal with when using Shotcut. This program is free and open-source. This means that you will not need to pay to download the program, nor will you need to pay for it at any point when using the program.
Once you download Shotcut to your computer, you can use it to create and edit as many videos as you want without having to pay for the program.
- Is Shotcut Good for YouTube?
Since Shotcut supports a wide range of video and audio formats, you can absolutely use it to create and edit videos that you will upload to YouTube. The only problem we find with Shotcut is that there is no way to upload the video to YouTube directly from within the program. This does mean that you will have to export the project as a video in one of the popular formats before uploading it to YouTube.
It is also worth mentioning that although Shotcut does support a wide range of video formats, frame rates, and resolutions, the one you choose will depend on the operating system you are using. For example, for Linux, you may find that you can only export a screen recording in MJPEG format only.
As you can see from the tutorial above, downloading Shotcut for Mac, PC and Linux is a very simple process. But we feel that we must point out that as useful as Shotcut is in the creation and editing of videos, you may find it has a very steep learning curve. Unlike many of the paid alternatives, the interface on this free tool is not arranged in a way that would make it easy to use. But once you get the hang of it, Shotcut can prove a very useful tool in creating and editing videos.

In Windows Search, type msinfo or msinfo32 and launch the desktop app named System Information. Look for the BIOS Mode item, and if the value for it is UEFI, then you have the UEFI firmware. If it says BIOS Mode Legacy, then that's the firmware you're running. Also, in general, UEFI-enabled machines have faster startup and shutdown times as compared to BIOS-Legacy machines. If you bought the computer/motherboard after 2010, chances are you have a UEFI system. If you are still unsure, download the UEFI version as it will also detect and run on a BIOS-Legacy computer.
It is highly recommended that you turn off Secure Boot or you will have a far less enjoyable computing experience. To disable Secure Boot, see here.
